It's a good week for fans of Team Ico! Recent news confirmed the release of the PS3 version of Ico and Shadow of the Colossus; now there is more information on Last Guardian, first revealed last year at E32009.

The news comes in a trio of information.

First up are a ton of screenshots on Sony's blog. These show little that's new about the game, confirming that it seems to incorporate elements of stealth, action, and puzzles. Mostly it provides further proof of Last Guardian's overwhelming beauty and the work that has gone into presenting the game world and especially the titular creature. We still don't know what it is, though.

Next up is a new trailer, though it does little except to remind us that the game is coming. Oh sure, there's a lot more scenes involving the incredible animation that went into the creature-griffin-cat-thing, but it does little to tell us more about the setting, story, or the inner game mechanics. As far as we know, this is a open-world Luck Dragon simulator.

Most exciting (but also frustrating) is the news of a release date. Save your cheers: it's the Holiday Season of 2011. This is hardly surprising, as all of team Ico's games take a long time to develop. Still, one hopes that, with such a long time in development, this may end up being a little longer than Shadow of the Colossus and Ico were, especially with what is bound to be a $60 price tag. Again, we know nothing about how any of this will pan out, as we don't even know what kind of game this will be.

Starting to see a through line, here? Let's try to unravel some of the mystery.

As I see things presented in the new trailer, it really seems like the Last Guardian mixes the best of Ico and Shadow of the Colossus. We have the giant creature and the climbing and riding him that was so much a part of Colossus, but then we also have him and the boy leading each other through environments, using each other's abilities to get past obstacles and enemies, in what is very much an Ico move.

Mixing two concepts from two of the most innovative titles to ever grace the PS2 with incredible next generation graphics and an aesthetic that is nostalgic before I even know what the game is about... well, I guess I can wait a year for that.

One thing's for sure... no one else is doing what Team Ico does. So there's little chance of the concept becoming stale before the game comes out. Now if only we knew what that concept was...
