Have you ever been playing a game and started to think, "Man, killing these Super Mutants in Fallout 3 would be much more awesome if only I could hear them scream in omni-directions?"

Probably not.

Regardless, the news that Sony's surround sound attachment for the PS3 is coming next week is going to be good news for many gamers. For a long time, surround sound has meant filling your room with four or more speakers set at various spots around the furniture. The new sound bar that Sony is bringing to the PS3 is sleek and relatively small. Even better, it is one piece of equipment that sits in front of your television.

The surround system has been designed specifically for the PS3 and for its Blu-Ray capabilities. For the full specs, check this out.

In the preview video for the device, the developers said something that really resonated with me. They said that sound is an often ignored aspect of gaming. As a reviewer, I've found this to be true. Few reviews (my own included) go into any depth on how good sound can create a living environment and keep the player immersed for hours of play, or even stick with them hours after they are done playing. Bad sound, on the other hand, can completely ruin the illusion. And don't even get me started on bad music.

For some gamers, a surround sound system may seem an odd attachment to buy as I believe this is the first one ever designed specifically for a console system. But Sony promises that, once you've hooked it up, you'll wonder how you ever gamed without it.
