Top 21 in 2010 - 10) Just Cause 2

2010 was a busy year and it saw the release of a bunch of great games. Staff and regular freelance contributors at Gameroni had the opportunity to play a wide variety of titles over the past 12 months and together we've compiled a list of 21 of our favorite games from the period. These are the ones that had the biggest impact on us, not necessarily the industry as a whole. We're sharing that list with you now, one title per day over a period of three weeks. Though there's only a loose order to this list, in general you can know that we liked games more as we work toward the number one selection.

10. Just Cause 2 (Xbox 360, PlayStation 3)

Would you like to know some facts? Here are some facts. Vatican City, the smallest country in the world, spans precisely 0.17 square miles. Bermuda, a bit larger, weighs in at a mere 21 square miles. All three Cayman Islands cover a combined total of 102 square miles, and the many U.S. Virgin Islands measure no more than 134 square miles. Guam? 212. Singapore? 270. And they’re all dwarfed by the gorgeous Asian island of Panau, which covers 400 square miles without breaking a sweat.

Most of those facts come to you courtesy of Wikipedia; the last one was pulled from Eidos’s official Just Cause 2 website, which describes, in detail, an island that does not exist. Your average game world would look absolutely miniscule next to any one of Panau’s many bustling cities, pristine beaches, lush jungles and towering mountains. Taken as a whole, the world that Eidos and Avalanche have created is nothing short of overwhelming. As I hinted, there are plenty of actual countries that don’t even compare.

You have a grappling hook with hundreds of feet of retractable cable. You have an unlimited supply of parachutes. You can hijack any vehicle, up to and including commercial airliners. Your primary objective is to destroy Panau’s infrastructure, which is accomplished by blowing up everything. Just Cause 2 doesn’t have much of a story to tell, and its basic gunplay, without the aid of a true cover system, feels downright archaic at times. But never mind. Even if it’s not the definitive action game statement, Just Cause 2 is the embodiment of everything the sandbox genre is supposed to stand for. It gives us a huge world, it gives us the means to traverse and explore the huge world, and it rewards us for doing so, either with explosions or simple eye candy. It’s got bigness in full supply, and the tumult to back it up. It is the most purely enjoyable game I played in 2010.

So if your development team is currently working on a sandbox game, your homework assignment is to play Just Cause 2 and know what you’re up against.
