Wipe the nebulous name NGP from your minds. Sony's next handheld device is now known as the Playstation Vita. Part of the Vita's appeal (Sony hopes) is social connectivity; "users will remain connected to content and each other on the go."

The three big social apps are dubbed 'near', 'LiveArea', and 'Party.' They do things you may expect. 'LiveArea' lets you check out info for specific games along with user accomplishments, "which in turn can trigger active real-time communication among users." 'Near' shows Vita users in the area and what they're playing. 'Party' allows people to talk through a headset or microphone regardless if they're playing the same game.

Some of this communication will be facilitated by AT&T, the official, and exclusive, wireless carrier for the Vita. The Vita is going to come in two flavors. Every Vita will be able to utilize Wi-Fi; these base models will retail for $249. Add in 3G capability, and the price jumps to $299.

As far as gaming capabilities go, the Vita will assert its take on touch screens and 3D.

"The PS Vita system incorporates a beautiful 5-inch multi-touch organic light emitting diode (OLED) as the front display and a unique multi-touch pad on the rear. Together with the front touch screen and the rear touch pad, the PS Vita system offers new game play allowing users to interact directly with games in three dimension-like motion, through "touch, grab, trace, push and pull" finger motions. Also the PS Vita system features two analog sticks which enable a wider range of game genres to be brought into the portable experience."

Sound like something you absolutely need? The system will launch worldwide at the end of this year.
