Consumers who preorder STEINS;GATE RE:BOOT will score a free bonus game, publisher Spike Chunsoft announced today. The title already released on Steam on Aug. 20, and is scheduled to arrive on Switch, Switch 2, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X on Oct. 29, 2026.

As its name suggests, STEINS;GATE RE:BOOT is a reboot of 2009's STEINS;GATE, a visual novel that debuted on Xbox 360 and later came to PC and then to Sony devices such as the PS3, PSP, and Vita. It has been kicking around for quite some time now.

Development on the original version was handled by Nitro Plus, a studio known for visual novels that sometimes include eroge (NSFW stuff, in other words). The rebooted version of STEINS;GATE features new visuals and new narrative content. It is designed by Mages, which is perhaps best known for the Corpse Party and Phantom Breaker: Battle Grounds.

Starting today, STEINS;GATE RE:BOOT is available to preorder on the Nintendo eShop for both Switch and Switch 2. The PlayStation 5 version does not yet seem to be available, and neither does the Xbox Series X edition. Yes, I'm sure. I checked just now.

When you preorder the game, you're eligible to receive a free game called STEINS;GATE Octet of Shifting Space. Today's press release describes it as "an ’80s PC-style adventure game" but was disappointingly stingy with the details. That's literally all I know about it for now.

STEINS;GATE is one of those games I always meant to play but never did. Now I look smart for procrastinating, because I'll have two versions to choose from if I ever do get around to it. I did at least buy the anime, which I understand released two years after the game, but I still haven't watched it... even though one of my coworkers swore it is fantastic. Do you see how I am? Absolutely terrible.

Will I eventually get to the game I should have played a long time ago? Will you preorder the rebooted version? Will the free game that comes with it actually be any good? Only time will tell. While you ponder those questions, consider checking out the game's official site to learn more about what I've been missing.
