Lair of the Leviathan, an upcoming game inspired by some of the classic RPGs of yesteryear, is currently in development and will release on PC and consoles sometime soon, publisher Deck13 announced today in a press release.
Developed by two solo developers, Nostalgic Realms and Whiskeybarrel Studios, Lair of the Leviathan was specifically inspired by the likes of Ultima, Pool of Radiance, and the early Baldur's Gate games.
The project began when David, the one-man show behind Nostalgic Realms, started developing Lair of Leviathan as a stay-at-home dad with a knack for pixel art. It began as a hobby, but when Oliver Joyce (of Whiskeybarrel Studios) came on board, suddenly they had something more.
Joyce came into his own during the days of Flash gaming, creating games played by hundreds of millions of players on various portals far and wide. He is best known for the Swords and Sandals gladiator series, which kids apparently love.

A paragraph in the press release succinctly outlines the quest the two developers now share:
RPGs have lost their identity over the last decades. Once, they were about exploring and writing your own adventure. Getting lost in interesting side quests, forming a party, and fighting well-balanced turn-based battles. Large worlds to explore at your own pace. Handcrafted dungeons and towns brimming with detail and life. A world the players experience in mind, instead of showcasing bombast all over the place. Game maps that beckon you to forge your own path rather than a task list of quest markers.
It's safe to say that a lot of older gamers playing games today remember those old classics and wish more of them were being made. Those players will want to keep an eye on Lair of the Leviathan so they can pick it up later on PC, or on one of the unspecified consoles.
