ININ today announced a "relaunch" for R-Type Dimensions 3, which originally launched on May 19, 2026. The game came and went without making much impact, but a second go-around might be just the ticket.

At launch, R-Type Dimensions 3 apparently suffered from a variety of issues, which today's relaunch aims to fix. The event coincides with the release of a third patch, as well as a digital artbook that previously was only available when consumers purchased the game's Ultimate Edition on Steam. It will be included with the purchase of all base editions, at no additional cost.

Reading between the lines of print in today's press release, as I have yet to play the game myself, the game arrived this May in pretty sorry shape. ININ announced an "improvement initiative" in June, with plans for "targeted updates and a strengthened quality assurance process."

That's all stuff that probably should have been in place before, but at least now it apparently is. The press release included the following note from ININ:

The past three months have been shaped in no small part by the R-Type community. Players who documented issues, tested builds, participated in the feedback process, and held ININ accountable have directly shaped the game today. That level of engagement - critical, knowledgeable, and consistent - has made a measurable difference in the many improvements.

The first two patches already addressed a variety of gameplay, collision, and audio/visual concerns, working to bring the experience closer to the one old school players might recall in R-Type 3: The Third Lightning. Today's third patch overhauls Advanced Mode boss behavior, further refines core gameplay systems, and provides stability and visual adjustments.

The Advanced Mode boss overhaul is considered the most substantial change, promising "a comprehensive rework of Stage 5 and Stage 6 boss behavior." From the sound of things, the community felt R-Type Dimensions 3 didn't accurately reflect the challenge and pattern design of the SNES classic the new game remakes.

It's a shame it took this long to get the game it sounds like we should have had at launch, but props to ININ and Tozai Games for sticking with the project to ensure we got there in the end.

R-Type Dimensions 3, now with the benefit of three patches, is available right now on Steam, PlayStation 5, and Xbox consoles. Previous versions of the game are also available on Switch and Switch 2, with the updated version expected within a day, following platform-specific certification.
