Pokemon Legends: Z-A

Main Mission 03: A New Life in Lumiose City

You've cleared the easiest of the game's missions, but there's still a lot to learn. This next mission walks you through a lot of it, providing knowledge you'll rely on for the rest of your adventure. Pay close attention throughout this guided tour as you add several additional Pokemon to your team and learn a new ability.

Meet up with your new friend in the lobby.

Start by leaving your room and taking the elevator to 1F (Lobby), where you can talk to Taunie. That conversation leads to you installing the Z-A Royale App on your Rotom Phone. You will use it a lot in your role as a Pokemon Trainer. With the app installed, agree when Taunie asks you to join Team MZ.

Once you join the team, you receive a Team MZ Jacket and a satchel as rewards. This exchange marks your official entry into the Z-A Royale. You begin at Rank Z, and a big goal in the game is to claw your way up to Rank A.

Next, Taunie demonstrates a roll move she thinks you'll need. The noise she makes brings another character into the scene: Lida. The game walks you through both dashing and rolling. Essentially, you start dashing by pressing the B button while moving around the world, and then you press Y to dive and roll.

Once you learn the move, practice it in the lobby area and then tend to your next mission objective.

Have a Pokemon battle with Taunie in front of the hotel

When you step out of the hotel, you find Taunie waiting for a quick two-round battle with you.

In the first round, she sends out Chikorita, of the grass element. You should get used to moving around the battlefield in this simple duel, and directing your Pokemon to attack when it is safe.

The second round pits you against Totodile. The fight isn't meant to challenge you, and it shouldn't as long as you keep a distance from the enemy Pokemon and send your companion in for the attack when any move cooldowns end.

For defeating Taunie and her Pokemon, you receive 280 Poke Dollars. The next objective also presents itself.

Visit the Pokemon Center in front of the Gare de Lumiose.

The game provides a pretty detailed map of Lumiose City, which you can access from your app. Use it to spot the Pokemon Center, which is located a short distance to the east from Hotel Z.

Follow Taunie through the archway to encounter an obstruction. Several large boulders prevent you from proceeding along the main street. Taunie responds by showing you a detour. Just follow her down an alley to the left and climb a ladder to a rooftop. Then follow a rooftop and drop off its far end to reach the lower street.

Learn all about Pokemon Centers

Chase after Taunie and enter a building to your left, just ahead of the four-way intersection. Talk to the lady at the counter and she will help you install the Pokedex app on your Rotom Phone. You'll take out your chosen starter Pokemon and register it to the Pokedex.

As the lady at the counter indicates, there is a reward when you register five unique Pokemon to your Pokedex. This sounds like great news to Taunie, who dashes off to find the nearby wild zone. You need to head for the same place.

Visit a wild zone to catch Pokemon

The wild zone is visible directly ahead of you, at the end of the street you're facing. Head that way and talk to Taunie, then enter the translucent green gate.

In this area, you will find and be attacked by various Pokemon. The game walks you through the basic, so pay close attention to the prompts. As they note, you press and hold the ZL button to target a nearby Pokemon. Then, while still holding ZL, press and hold ZR to lift the Pokeball. Aim and then release the button to toss the Poke Ball.

To get you started, Taunie hands over 10 Poke Balls.

Throw a Poke Ball to catch Fletchling!

Using the technique you just learned, toss a Poke Ball at the nearby Fletchling. Your first toss will not capture the Pokemon, even if it connects, but a second hit will capture it for you.

Use your Pokemon's moves to reduce Bunnelby's HP, then throw a Poke Ball at it to try to catch it.

The game expects you to bring out your Pokemon by pressing the Up button on the d-pad. Then you can use a few moves to weaken Bunnelby.

In its weakened state, Bunnelby is more susceptible to capture by Poke Ball. However, it's technically possible to just throw a Poke Ball at it. If you're lucky, as I was, you might capture it immediately without having to fight.

When you catch the Bunnelby, you receive another 10 Poke Balls from Taunie, who is giving them out like candy today.

Register at least five species of Pokemon in your Pokedex, then head to the Pokemon Research Lab for your reward.

In the wild zone area, you now need to catch an additional couple of Pokemon, so that your total is at least five. There are more than two additional varieties of Pokemon in the area. Nearby, you can easily find and catch enough to meet the objective. On my first visit, I grabbed Scatterbug, Weedle, and Mareep.

Once you have the ones you need to meet your count of five, leave the wild zone and head to the nearby Pokemon Research Lab, which is on your map if you've gotten lost. Its a short little stroll from the wild zone's exit.

Go report your Pokedex-filling success at the Pokemon Research Lab.

In the building, you'll meet an employee. She directs you to the nearby elevator.

Enter the elevator and ride to 3F: Director's Office. When you arrive upstairs, a brief cutscene follows. When it ends, head around the blue privacy screen to meet the person you saw talking on the phone. She introduces herself as Mable.

Agree to help Mable and you gain access to Mable's Research objectives, which offer generous rewards when you complete them. For your first effort, you receive a TM for Rock Smash, which will come in handy almost immediately.

Return to Hotel Z to meet up with Taunie.

Return downstairs and exit the building. There, you meet Naveen, another member of your team. He hands over the Striped Trilby, which is a snazzy hat. Then you receive some advice on using your new TM.

To learn the TM move, access the menu. Select Satchel and then use the L and R buttons to tab over to the TMs category of items. You should see Rock Smash listed. Select “Use this item” and you will see that only Bunnelby can use it (so far). Boot it up to master the ability.

There are some rocks near the glowing green wild zone area, just ahead of you. Walk over to them and then bring out your Bunnelby. You can use the new move to smash the rocks apart. An item, Revive, should even appear.

Now you can either head back to the hotel immediately to talk to Taunie and complete the mission, or you can explore some more. The path to the hotel takes you back through the wild zone.

There are other attractions (including items and more Pokemon) on the roof of a building you can climb up to along the way, but I recommend saving that stuff for a little later. To get back to the hotel, you'll need to have Bunnelby use the Rock Smash move again.

When you arrive back at the hotel, head inside to meet with Taunie and then the mission concludes. A cutscene follows, wherein you learn about an upcoming promotion match. Winning that match will be your next mission.
