Pokemon Legends: Z-A

Main Mission 14: Reaching Rank E

This mission is longer and more involved than a number of the ones you've recently completed, and it centers around the opponent you'll face to reach Rank E: a dynamic streamer named Canari. Naveen is a big fan.

Battle Naveen to get the information you need about Canari.

When you clear Main Mission 10 by taking out three Rogue Mega Pokemon, you receive a call on your Rotom Phone advising you that your next opponent is a streamer named Canari, who Naveen has mentioned in past conversations.

Your first objective within the mission is to head into the Hotel courtyard, where Naveen waits. When you talk to him, a battle will follow. You can power up before initiating that conversation, if you need to. When you face Naveen, you will go up against Ariados, Sableye, and Scraggy.

None of those Pokemon are likely to give you much trouble, especially if you have leveled up your starter a bit. For me, Emboar was able to win handily by regularly using the Flame Wheel move. Victory gains you 1,848 Poke Dollars. A cutscene follows, and then you have your next objective.

Get a Challenger's Ticket, then talk to Naveen for your next steps.

To even go up against Canari, you'll need to acquire the usual Challenger's Ticket. This time, the cost is 32,000 ticket points. Unsurprisingly, you must get them by facing other Pokemon Trainers in the battle zone at night.

The battle zone you explore is located near the southwest portion of the city. Because of the high number of tickets required, you may have to play on multiple evenings to get the total points required. If that's the case, remember that you can always sit down on a bench to advance to night, or to morning.

Within the battle zone, the usual strategies all apply. You're deep enough into the game that you'll need to start leveling up a diverse group of Pokemon, with various strengths and weaknesses to help them defeat the tougher opponents they face. This is a terrific time to catch up on side missions, if you've been neglecting them. There's no rush. I usually take out four or five opponents in a row, then zip to the nearest Pokemon Center for some healing before going after more opponents. As long as you keep elemental weaknesses in mind and don't send your Fire monsters against Water monsters or something similar, you should do fine. Then you can talk to Naveen in the lobby of Hotel Z.

Meet up with Naveen at the site of the Canari Quiz Whiz Contest.

After you talk to Naveen at Hotel Z, you need to arrange another conversation. This time, you'll need to sneak into the Canari Quiz Whiz Contest, which is located near the city's western portion.

Fast travel to the Magenta Pokemon Center, which is right near your destination. Then walk the rest of the way. As you get close, Naveen meets you and explains the rules. You have to win three matches of a contest in order to win the prize: Canari's attention.

Naveen offers a headset, so you can communicate throughout the event. You also get a heads up on the password required at the entry: "Let's go, DYN4MO!" Then you have a new objective.

Enter the Canari Quiz Whiz Contest!

Proceed along the street a short distance from where you met Naveen and turn left to arrive at the gate. There, a guard demands that you provide the password. You don't give it all at once. Instead, you answer one piece at a time. The answers to select are Let's, Go, and DYN4MO!

The scenes that follow introduce you to another Canari fan, and then you start the event. To play, you either agree with statements the Canari hologram makes, or you disagree with them. You have several seconds to rush to the checkbox (if you agree) or to the ‘X’ (when you disagree). The questions and answers are as follows:

  • The claim: Canari is crazy good at falling block puzzle games. [TRUE]
  • True or false? Macarons are my favorite food! [FALSE]
  • True or false? Electric-type Pokemon are my fave! [TRUE]

When you pass the first round, Canari introduces her Pokemon, Eelektross. Then the second round begins with a fetch quest.

Buy a very special Lumiose Galette at Cafe Gallant.

Canari wants you to find her Pokemon's favorite dessert. Naveen tells you to head for Cafe Gallant.

You arrive in time to witness a scene. Naveen quizzes you on Eelektross. The correct answer is Its fangs?, although there doesn't appear to be any penalty if you get it wrong. Either way, you will leave with the Super Lumiose Galette.

Return to the Contest site to answer the quiz question.

Travel back to the quiz contest, to the west of the cafe. When you arrive, Canari will ask you what you have. Answer It's a Super Lumiose Galette. Canari is pleased with your performance. Then she proposes her next challenge.

Claim victory in a Pokemon battle to secure your right to answer the quiz question.

You'll have to fight a battle against Mani (your worthy rival) to get the first crack at answering the next quiz question.

Mani attacks with Electric-type Pokemon. They are Helioptile, Emolga, and Raichu. For the most part, you just need to make sure you're not relying on Pokemon that are weak to electrical attacks. In my case, my Emboar was powered up pretty well, so he took out each opponent with a Flame Wheel or two. You might want to have some potions available, in case things go badly or if your levels are a bit lower, but it shouldn't be a difficult fight no matter what.

Canari will then ask a question: When I was a kid, I played my first games on a laptop. Who owned that laptop? Naveen provides the answer, so make sure that you choose 4) Your grandpa. Then you get to pick your prize. I haven't played around with the various options, because I'd like a promotion match is obviously correct.

After Canari disappears, you can choose a response to Naveen. I went with Thank you, Naveen, but I'm not sure you can go wrong with either answer.

Head to Racine Construction, following the instructions you got from Canari.

You finally are about to meet up with Canari. The battle will take place in the Racine Construction building, which you should be able to reach with a fast travel.

Enter the building and talk to Tarragon, who is waiting behind the desk. He challenges you to a battle.

Boss Battle: Tarragon of Dyn4mo

The first Pokemon Tarragon sends at you is Hippowdon, followed by Diggersby and Excadrill.

Tarragon's lineup of Pokemon is more challenging than it seems at first. If you have a powerful Pokemon but it's not of the right element, you might take a bit of abuse before pulling out a victory, even if you lead by several levels. My Emboar wasn't super efficient, for example. However, healing potions will get you through it. You just need to be ready for status ailments.

With Excadrill, be ready for your foe to use a Mega Evolution. Save your own Mega Evolution for that part of the fight, if possible, so you can survive the more damaging attacks. Remember that you can use an item from your satchel every few seconds, but not more often than that. Therefore, if you start to see Pokemon drop to attacks, you should keep your distance long enough to revive one or more of them, and then to heal them before bringing them out to fight again.

After the battle, a cutscene follows and then you have another new objective.

Investigate the small room in the garage at the Racine Construction headquarters.

The room in question is just a few meters away. Go ahead and enter it. You will meet with Canari at last. A brief scene follows.

Face off against Canari in your promotion match.

It all comes down to this. You appear back in the main garage. Approach Canari to trigger the battle you've been trying to arrange.

Boss Battle: Canari of Dyn4mo!

You will need to fight Heliolisk, Stunfisk, Ampharos, and Eelektross.

As you may suspect, these Pokemon use electrical attacks. You need to counter their moves with something that holds up well in the face of such a storm. Emboar does reasonably well, especially if its levels are sufficiently high, but you're better off using an electrical beast (for natural resistance).

Eelektross can take a lot of abuse, since it floats through the air and isn't particularly weak to anything you might throw its way. Make sure you have potions available and that you have your Pokemon gulp them down as needed.

When you finally win the fight, you'll improve to Rank E and receive 2,808 Poke Dollars. Most helpfully, you receive the Volt Switch TM. You also snag an Autographed Plush to give to Naveen. The mission concludes with a couple of cutscenes and then the next one automatically begins.
